It is well known that Serbia has a large meat production. The ABPs market in Serbia is estimated at 250,000 tons annually. The total market quantities consist of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste in the proportion 40-45% hazardous and 55-60% non-hazardous ABP. According to available data, only 70,000 tons of ABPs are being treated by rendering plants. The rest, about 180.000 tons, cannot be traced and is considered to be dumped into the rivers or nature or to re-enter the food chain.
